Player counts are the first thing most people check before joining an Open Tibia server — and they are also the easiest number to fake. If you have ever logged into a "1,200 online" OTS and found empty hunting grounds, you already know the problem. Why fake player counts exist
Inflated online counts drive rankings on server lists, push a server toward the top of search results, and create social proof for new players. On most legacy OT lists nothing verifies the number — the server reports it, the list displays it. A single line of Lua or a modified login.lua is enough to add hundreds of fake characters to the response. That is why the same servers that claim four-digit populations often feel like ghost towns in-game.
The 7 signals of a spoofed OTS player count
1. Flat, unnaturally stable numbers
Real player counts breathe. They rise in the evening (peak hours in the server's target region), dip overnight, and swing on weekends. A server that sits at exactly 847 online for six hours straight, or oscillates within a ±3 player band all day, is almost certainly reporting a static or scripted value. 2. Zero variance between weekdays and weekends
Weekend traffic on healthy OT servers is typically 20–40% higher than a Tuesday afternoon. If the 7-day average matches the current online count almost exactly, someone is capping or faking the number. OTSPulse exposes Avg 7d and Avg 30d right next to Peak 24h for this reason.
3. Round-number peaks that never break
A hard ceiling at 500, 1000, 1500 — always the same, never one over — is a giveaway that the number is generated, not measured. Real peaks are messy: 1,047, 1,183, 972.
4. Players online exceeds players max
It sounds obvious, but it happens. A "1,200 / 1,000" line in a status response means the server is either misconfigured or reporting a value from a different source than the actual login queue. Either way, do not trust it.
5. New server, huge population, no history

7. Discord is empty
1,000 concurrent players almost always means an active Discord with hundreds of daily messages. If the linked Discord shows 40 members and the last message is from three weeks ago, the online count is fiction.
